Carbon case watches?

Post by manitoujoe » Thu Oct 05, 2017 5:58 pm

Does anyone have any thoughts on the lower-end carbon case watches? Like Tempest's version. Are corners cut because of the lower price point? Any stories on wear? Since it's not steel/brass/bronze, I'm not sure if this is a wise buy.

Here's a link to Tempest's Carbon. I really like the dial/hands. Just know nothing about the material/long-term on these.
Thoughts?

I had the magrette carbon. It’s very light. Feels plasticy and porous. Rough finish. Could see machine marks on the case. The novelty wore off rather fast.

Oh $#*!. Thank you buddy. The marketing pics look so smooth. I also read on a WUS recent sales thread that a guy dropped his and rather than try to fix, they sent a new one. Not the best long-term vibe.

That Margrette looks like shit. All those holes need some plaster of Paris.

+1 for the Luminox. I know they're sorta lame, but I'll be damned if this ain't a killer aesthetic. Good for 'range day,' just a bummer they're 46mm.

No offense but those all look like shit.

This is the only carbon watch I want. Pity it's discontinued.

I didn’t think people actually owned these things. But, sure. People say they hate watches I like all the time but whatevs. I’m just in a really bad mood today.

Last week I handled the new “Breitlight” composite quartz model. It’s around $2k. It felt cheap to me.

Remember that at the end of the day this material is plastic resin with varying amounts of carbon fibers or powder mixed in. Nothing magical about it. Will probably scratch like a G Shock.

Actually because the case fell apart. Search TRF about it. The thing basically pealed away at the corners.

I’d rather have the ceramic version (also discontinued) if it had yellow highlights instead of the orange. For some reason the colors. Don’t work for me.

I also like the white ceramic.

The new all ceramic APRO is amazing. If I were going to drop $50,000+ on a sport watch it be that one.

The carbon watches feel like cheap plastic to me. I'm sure the quality is there but I could never warm up to them.

I looked at the Helson carbon case'd diver for a while, but ultimately never got one due to the sheer size. The concept of a lightweight CF case interests me, but I would have concerns about its durability.

Magrette may just be an example of how to do it wrong.

It may not reflect all micro finishes.

The H2O case looks flawless in that aspect.

Forged carbon defiantly is a love or hate kinda thing. It's definitely not a 'steel' feeing material nor does it have any "weight" to it. And because it's composite it is in the 'plastic' family.

It's ultra strong stuff but like ceramic it's brittle so don't drop it or smack it hard.

And if it's not a good forging of material (ie air bubbles, poor layering, etc) it will fall apart and fail.

I love the material. And much prefer the layered forged carbon like how PAM, Helson and H2O did it vs the marble effect of the Magrette and AP pictured above.

Honestly every finish H20 has done has been outstanding. His designs might not be for me but his execution is flawless.
