Time to test Omega warranty

Post by stonehead887 » Sun Oct 01, 2017 4:35 am

So I have had my Omega SMPc for about 2 months and no issues at all. I have been wearing it a lot so it's only fully wound down a couple of times.
The other day I noticed it was about 10 mins slow but I am not sure if it was toward end of power reserve. Anyway, after winding and wearing it is now running fast 15mins! At first i thought i had not set time correctly bit no, 15 mins fast within 6 hours. Weird thing, it's not running any faster than that.
So I am a bit disappointed bit also I guess it's one of those things. No idea how long it will take to fix.
In the meantime I will 'only' have 28 watches to choose from...

Did you try demagnetizing it first?

That's what AD asked, I wouldn't know how to demagnetise it myself. And I am unsure how it would have got magnetised in the first place. I don't do anything different with this piece, never had a issue before. Oh Well, it's under warranty and will go back

You can buy one of those cheap blue demagnetizers from China on eBay for less than $10. The one I got worked the one time I needed it. Worth a shot and not a bad thing to have around.

Thanks for the tips. I think as it's quite new, it will go back especially as don't know for sure what's wrong. In the meantime I have downloaded the Physics Toolbox Suite from Google play and there is a magnometer on it. No idea how accurate it is but this was the reading from holding my cell phone about 2cm over my tablet.

I pretty much guarantee that's it's magnetized. I have a Stowa Seatime that started running really fast like that. I realized later that day that I had put my watch down for the night on top of my fancy new eyeglass case that had a very strong little magnet closure. I deguassed it myself in less than a minute and it's been fine ever since. In 30+ years of collecting watches that's the first time I've had one get magnetized.

I wouldn't bother sending it back without being sure if it's magnetized or not first. Such an easy fix. Why send it and be without it and risk that they return it scratched up...
if you have a compass, hold it over the watch and of the needle moves it's magnetized.
If it is then it's a 30-sec fix

Many jewelers and watch repair shops have a demagnetizing machine. You can call/email to ask. Last time I asked them to do it, they didn't even charge me. Takes just a few seconds.

Keep your watch away from your microwave oven, it has a very strong magnet inside.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will check at AD tomorrow if they can demagnetise before it goes away. I appreciate it could well be magnetized but I a have my doubts. Not based on anything scientific other than 10 years collecting and wearing experience. The Omega has done nothing different than any of my other watches and until it has been mentioned here, I have never given magnetic fields a single though during every day wear. Today it's less fast. And I may just be a little OCD here but as it's new, and my must expensive to date, I would rather it was looked at properly.

So still not had a chance to go to AD, that will be Saturday. In the meantime, can I call on some expert knowledge again? Symptoms most likely magnetized. Not worn watch for a day 2 and fully wound down so thought would give it another shot. Now it's running super fast, 10 mins in 30 and second 'leaps' forward, it's not ticking at smooth consistent rate. Would that also be a symptom of magnetization? And no, it's not been knocked or dropped.
Cheers

A sudden and dramatic change in time keeping for no reason screams magnetized. It's the obvious first solution.

Quick way to know for sure if it is magnetized is to use a compass. Check out my post here:

Dude it is most likely magnetized. Get that checked and out of the way already
Use a compass to check. Takes 5 seconds.

I have had it now demagnetized. Seems that was not the problem. Watch still running very fast, second hand not ticking smoothly at all. Next stop Omega. Oh well. Thanks for all the advice so far.

I would concur with what's been said already. My best guess is the watch is magnetised. It is an easy fix and no need to open up the watch. A watch can get magnetised in any number of ways but it's nothing to worry about. You can buy a demagnatiser on eBay as said above for very little and it's s good tool to have in your kit for the future. It's as simple as pressing the button and passing the watch over it, done.
Or take it to any watch repair centre and they are sure to have one.
It doesn't need to be opened for this procedure so can be done anywhere.
If they say it's not magnetised then you go to Omega.

Edit,
Just seen other replies, disregard :-)

I hope it's fixed soon too. I am a little disappointed. I appreciate it's not high end but not exactly cheap either but its one of those things.
