The OMFG Story of the Day
So, like most of us, I am friendly with my FedEx guy. Rick always makes sure I get what I need as early as possible. It's also nice that he is a watch guy and often wants to see the inveiling.
He just dropped off the latest and asked where I'd been? He'd been trying to get a hold of me for help. Because...
He was driving north with the family and saw a barn sale with a "guns for sale" sign. He collects those as well and despite the grumping of the aforementioned wife and kids, he pulled over to have a look.
These farmers knew their guns and they were ar market or above...no deals to be had. On his way out he spotted a box with some old watches in it. As he thumbed through them he pulled out a GMT Master...cracked crystal and well worn. Naw, has to be a fake. Asked farmer 1 "how much for the fake Rolex"? "Five bucks" he answered.
Gets home and takes bracelet off...1950's rivet spring bracelet with correct markings.
Case marks?...couldn't be...
He was holding a 1955-56 Rolex GMT Master with original bracelet and bakelite bezel....that he bought for $5
After he couldn't get a hold of me, he reached out to some other guys. Monday, a classic velour jump suit wearing, wife beater and gold chain clad "goombah" from NYC flew into Grand Rapids airport and handed him $30,000 in cash and a brand new Rolex Sub from his shop.
He's sending me pics and I'll share them later.
Why doesn't this shit happen to me

Holy shit! Great story! Reminds me of that dude that found the LeCoultre compressor at goodwill last year! Thanks for sharing.

WOW! Never underestimate another man's junk pile. If you watch American Pickers it's amazing the value of the stuff they find.

Re: The OMFG Story of the Day
too cool for school. This is a story worth sharing with the wife to justify the hobby. "This next watch purchase could make a rich!"
Re: The OMFG Story of the Day
Wow! That's something that doesn't happen everyday. Good for him!
Re: The OMFG Story of the Day
That is incredible!
I'm going picking this weekend....

If it's a real OG bakelite bezel, he gave that watch away. Still, incredibly cool.

It is, and I told him we could have done better, but he has a great attitude. $5-$40,000? Happy.

Exactly. It's not up on his IG yet, though.justsellbrgs wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2017 7:51 amwould not surprise me if it was -- lunaroyster -- on Instagram... he chases vintage Rol hard...
Re: The OMFG Story of the Day
Yeah... the bezel alone, depending on condition, was worth more than what he got....
I guess we'll see it pop up again soon!

If this came from a different source, I wouldn't believe it, but knowing this is true it's a very cool story.

That's what I imagine "Gil" from "The Watch Collector NY" looks like...a classic velour jump suit wearing, wife beater and gold chain clad "goombah" from NYC

While the guy maybe 'gave' it away at 40K, I don't think many non-wis would turn down that deal.
