Never worked lunaroyster but have with Takuya and if I had the capitol I would give it a shot. Americandave and I have a mutual friend (more so his) with really deep pockets as he made it big with his local company, but he doesn't seem interested just yet. I think there's a market where I am especially with a local family owned Rolex/Longines/BM AD but I'm not a salesman and don't know how to proceed even though a DWC member did offer to back me. The security end scared me a bit so I chickened out... Would need to buy an old beater Metro to courier them and install an impenetrable floor safe to sleep at night.

I imagine most of these resellers had lucrative jobs prior to the watch biz. This is an industry where it takes lots of money to make money.

They had money before?

Maybe Drster can tell us if there's money to be made.

I doubt most people can pay cash for stock of high end watches that ADs are having difficulty moving.

This.

Not entirely sure how it all works but they'd have to be buying by the small truck load as the margins can't be massive on each sale... few hundred there and a thousand on a Patek there. Or are they? My initial thought was it would be a good side job as it couldn't take up too much time unless you're into it like the grey market big boys.

Drop ship. Apparently that's what all the cool watch sellers are doing these days :)

These guys low ball the shit out of forum people and then immediately flip for 30% more, often without even bothering to check the watch on a timer. I think their margins are fat fat fat.

Yup. The difference is these guys have new watches and take trades, so they get offers the average guys don't.

I bet Govberg is also crazy loaded. Their margins must be nuts given the low ball they offered me.

as said above it takes money to make money....I bet these guys were more than stable with mad disposable income when they began this phase of their lives and decided to do something they like/love doing.

Very true.

If you're just too lazy to move it you accept the lowball. They'll have your watch to you by the next morning if they've worked with you before and trust you. Otherwise, just send your watch to the local FedEx with their label when you can and you'll have your new watch in 48hrs or less. The price of convenience.

I agree.

I think back in the early forum days you could have worked your way up with a local ad purchase of a few watches and worked your way up to a massive inventory and list of leads at your disposal.

But in order to competitive now as a newbie you better have enough capital to clear out a small jewelry store of their unsold inventory

The only reason why these guys end up with desirable crap like the Pelagos LHDs days after available to the public is because they're probably buying massive amounts of inventory when it's not selling... kind of a payback for helping each other out. Most businesses don't have the ability to buy a few hundred thousand worth of goods when an opportunity presents itself.

Rolex makes it easy for these guys. They ship their ADs inventory whether they want it or not, and then cut dealers when they don't move what they get. It's an ideal set up for selling out the back door.

It's DWC so you need to clarify. He may have meant something entirely different.

I was once told by a well respected and experienced watch dealer that it is really easy to make a small fortune in watch dealing you just need to start with a large fortune.
