Advice on a kid's dive watch?

Post by manitoujoe » Tue Jan 10, 2017 5:44 pm

Hey!

My buddy is a new WIS (just bought the Bathys here) and he wants to get his kiddo his first dive watch. He's 10 and needs something not too big, under $100, and great lume. :)

I thought the SKX007, but my buddy's telling me they don't come under $200. Sounds wrong, but who knows.

Help?

Not a true dive watch, but 100m, and price isn't bad for a 10 year old.

Citizen NY2300

Smaller than the SKX007, and still 200m.

Cool piece but lume is not nukulur. The NY0040 lume is far brighter. Worth considering.

Hard to go wrong with an SKX. Maybe the smaller 38mm case model would fit his son best.
This is SKX013K1. Can be found new under $200.

Seiko for me. Skx013 an option, but the 007 will be better in the long run. That's what I gave my son.

For a 10 year old, I'd recommend a quartz from a reputable brand.

Seiko, Citizen, etc...

For a 10 year-old under $100? ... quartz, plastic, Casio or Timex

Any cheap Casio dive watch. Have one for a beater and it's held up better than I've expected for around $70 shipped

So True. I remember my first dive watch was a Casio anadigi model with 200m WR when I was a teen. That thing almost lasted forever. It never quit on me and I just ended up loosing it somewhere. I would've gotten another one, but then I discovered Seiko dive watches. Great durable and affordable watches.

When they get older they can give you shit for buying them the cheapest POS possible. At least give them an automatic.

...and at least get them a proper dive watch, not some plastic, quartz, Walmart watch. At 10, I think they can handle it.

Given the choice, I definitely would have bought a cheap POS over a nice automatic for my 10 year old self.

If the boy expresses interest in automatic watches then sure, buy an automatic. But as many married dudes here have learned with their wives, you can't force automatic on someone who doesn't want to hassle with an automatic.

I just saw that Casio is 44mm. Kinda big for a ten year old's wrist, no? I'd look for 38 or smaller.

I think it's 40mm. I did a brief search as well, but my Google-fu may have failed me...
