Got the itch for a (old school) pilots watch

Post by Heuerville » Fri Dec 23, 2016 9:34 am

I've managed to be very good the past year or so, not buying anything.
However, I do miss my old Hanhart 417ES Flieger.. pic below.. which I sold a while back. (Yes, I'm an idiot)

Image

So, I've been having a look at a couple of Hanharts modern take on the flieger.
There are a couple of models, the mono pusher, and the more 'usual' twin pusher models. Both have a similar look..

Image

However, the Junghams really intrigues me too. I'm still not sure about that bezel. From some angles I think it looks stunning, from 'straight on', I'm not so sure.

Image

Both seem to be great value ($2k-ish), and have that under-the-radar-cool that is right in my wheel house.
I just wish that Junghans did a coin-edge bezel version, that would be perfect for me!

Has anyone got any hands-on experience of the Junghans?

I don't know about that bezel either. Love everything else about it.

No hands-on experience with the Junghans but I've had the modern Hanharts on the wrist a few times and really like them. I'd personally go for the monopusher for its uniqueness. Chris (CGSshorty) has the 40mm model and can provide more insight.

42mm monopusher

40mm dual pusher

I think the dial layout of the 40mm is a lot nicer than the 42mm.

Looks great but did you remember if the crown interfered with rotating the bezel? I have a very particular way of rotating my bezels which involves the careful positioning of cap lifters and dull knives.

I forgot to ask, due to its size/shape, does the crown dig into the top of your wrist? I've had issues with large crowns that are shaped similarly that tended to rub into or bother my wrist/hand

Ugh. There was a dude selling a LNIB mon-pusher on ebay. I had him down to $1200 but somebody bought it before I had a chance to complete the purchase. Those pics piss me off now. Looks great.

I won't buy one without a steep discount. Resale is brutal for Hanhart watches. Maybe Shorty can get us a discount from the WB db's.

I don't know if Page and Cooper is allowed to ship Hanharts to the US (they definitely are not allowed to ship Sinn) but if they can then you'd save about $300 at today's rates. Still not as low as the eBay deal but a bit better.

The 40mm Hanhart is the way to go. The 45mm is enormous and the 42 is uninspired.
My wrist is around 7.25-7.5" depending on time of day and I have no issues with the size of the 40mm.

They are good peeps, but I'd be inclined to go with Define watches before I tried P+C simply because they fixed WB's botched attempt at being an AD. I'm fairly sure they'll both ship Hanhart to the US, but I still can't take the risk of losing $500-1000 on the flip of one of their watches. The Hanharts only seem to sell for $1200-1400 used.

Definitely. Cliché, but it does wear larger because of the long lugs.

The 40mm Hanhart is where it's at. The bezel on the Junghans bezel is horrible.

I think that may have been me that bought it - was the seller from Taiwan? If so, it was definitely me. Its a beautifully made watch. If I decide to sell it, will let you know!
