Bremont Skipping BaselWorld in 2017
http://elink-eu.azuresend.com/m/8003bb2 ... 07/122016n
After exhibiting at the Basel Watch Fair for many years, Bremont is excited to be launching its 2017 watch collection on home turf, in the UK. Bremont will take over a townhouse in the heart of London over the course of a week, where it aims to bring the brand to life. This will be the first time the 2017 releases will be showcased, the brand will be exclusively exhibiting some of its military collections and looks forward to being joined by a number of its esteemed ambassadors and brand partners.
2017 will mark the 10th anniversary from Bremont launching its first collection of watches and 15 years since the company was founded. Since inception in 2002, Bremont has made huge strides towards bringing watch making back to Britain and reinvigorating this once booming industry, so it only seems fitting to mark the occasion on British soil.
Giles English: “As a British watch company we are very keen for retailers and media alike to see us in our own environment and to join us in the UK to really experience what British watch making is all about."
Nick English: “Basel is such a major global watch fair so we have to be confident that we can provide enough of an attraction here in the UK and I feel we can. The fact that our historical Basel exhibition space 'The Palace' will be closed for 2017 is also a factor in our decision making."
The UK has not only had a very positive year in luxury watch sales, outperforming many other global watch markets which have seen negative declines, but it also accounts for over 50% of Bremont’s business. Bremont has grown its strength as a domestic watch brand as well as growing its domestic UK sales by over 20% in 2016, the firm is as positive as ever about the future of the market. Brexit has of course put the prices of many of the Swiss watch brands up in the UK; as a local producer Bremont is benefiting from the weakness in the pound.

Hm, renting a townhouse versus renting a Basel booth. I guess their VC backers really don't have bottomless pockets.

This reads like they are too cheap to pony up the Basel tariff.

Who needs it? Why try and outshine the other brands in that atmosphere if it's not necessary?

If they have it at the same time Baselworld is going on they might not get much press.

I don't read anything negative about this, it actually appears to make sense for Bremont.

What I read from the article is the costs have become prohibitive. $3MM?

+1
Re: Bremont Skipping BaselWorld in 2017
Agreed, better to get some press for not showing up, than blending in with the hundreds of other watch manufacturers at Basel.Joeprez wrote:I don't read anything negative about this, it actually appears to make sense for Bremont.
Re: Bremont Skipping BaselWorld in 2017
Agreed though – I don't see anything negative with this story. The era of the tradeshow itself is in a sharp decline, and by making the launch an exclusive event in a rad, intimate location, it seems like it makes more sense on just about every front.

Maybe a small insight that more companies won't be at Basel.

The buyers that aren't shelling out big bucks for big watch brands that are looking for alternatives just had the door shut in their face.

Trade shows have seen a major decline over the last ten years. My company pulled out of our major shows and we spent the dollars on other marketing tools including expanded web presence. I call it the google effect, as you used to go to trade shows to find about the latest innovations...now it's an internet search.

Even SIHH is opening their doors to the public for the first time this year. Sure, it's just for one day at the end of the program, but if you had told an industry pundit that this would happen even five years ago, they would've said that you're nuts. Frankly, the rise of the internet, and now social media, have blunted the effectiveness and impact of the major trade shows . Why do I need to travel to Geneva and spend thousands of dollars on flights, hotels and food (well, not so much food, since there's a dinner every night), when I can just sit in front of my computer or glance at my phone to see the latest and greatest?
I say bully for Bremont.

Adam

Good on Bremont. These high end trade shows are nothing more than a bank for the organisers.
Not really related, but; I went to this years Geneve Motor Show - obviously highly oversold on the tickets.. probably the most miserable, hideous experience I've had in many years. The best part was squeezing myself outside and grabbing a coffee on the street.
