As a Rolex layman, that's damn nice. Love it. He isn't saying much but it sounds like he likely got a steal of a deal.

I always find this stuff a bit weird.

Imagine you are an old guy that runs a business that sells (or used to sell) Rolex/High end watches, and you have a very old safe.
You know watches inside out, it's been your life for 30-40-50 years. You telling me that you've never thought "might look at the back of that safe, could be $1m worth of stuff", then thought.. "nah, I'm not interested". I'll wait until someone asks.

Some are more aloof than others, but it does sound unlikely.

Sometimes , the scope of the work is simply overwhelming to ponder, and you let go of it "for later down the road." For example, I know I have a lot of new or refurbished parts for probably 30 different cars I've owned laying around in my warehouse, from bumpers and kits to wheels and hardtops. But until the time comes for someone to ask for a white on beige R129 SL panoramic hard too, there's no motivation to clean the crap out, catalog it, etc.

Tl;dr: I'm a lazy Chinese man.

I'm sure the watch wasn't worth a whole lot when someone traded it in back in the 70s.

I don't find this sort of thing surprising.

When I was packing stuff in preparation to move last year, I boxed up and confirmed the serial numbers on all my guns. Tucked in the back of the safe I found a brand new Colt Combat Commander. Only after thinking about it for a little while did I even remember buying it a couple of years previously.

I'm not that old, and I don't have that big of a collection. So I can see how an older guy that deals in large volumes of stuff could forget about something like this.

I once found some lint at the back of a drawer that I forgot I had.
