Seiko 6105
Mulling over adding one of these. Looking for advice.
1. Prices seem all over from $550 to $1500.
2. Looking for lower end beater....good source?
3. Are the "built-mod" ones ok? (Not my first choice...but $125 is enticing).
4. I am an admitted member of the He-man-Seiko-haters club, so very ignorant on pitfalls with these.
That's it. Please educate me.

1- I've never seen them that high. I've seen near perfect ones for $1100. I've had a couple $1000 ones that are as good as they get. I've had decent ones around $700.
2- there are a couple good sellers on SCWF. One is uncle Seiko, I forget the others but most that are on that site are really reliable.
3- never heard of and don't know what you mean by built mod.
4- pitfalls are ones with aftermarket parts. The AM dials are way too green so you can see right away. Make sure to look up all originals before buying one to compare bezel insert and hands.
Are you familiar with the locking crown? It does not screw down, it is a push down crown and the lock simply spins one way so you cannot pull it out on accident. Some of these locked crowns are broke and cannot actually lock.

Re: Seiko 6105
The only one I saw recently asking more than $1k looked like a NOS example out of a time capsule.
Re: Seiko 6105
Agree on all points. Likewise, Uncle Seiko often sells great examples, some needing absolutely nothing and others showing they've lived a purposeful life. As for #3, while they're hardly what I'd consider rare, I'd be far more inclined to leave it in stock form. The 6105 is a robust movement and AFAIK it hacks. That said, I still love this 6105 mod.BBK357 wrote:demer03 wrote:Mulling over adding one of these. Looking for advice.

1. Prices seem all over from $550 to $1500.
The lower end will have all aftermarket parts, which I personally wouldn't buy. I have seen them as high as $1500 in basically NOS condition with box/papers. $1000 is about right for an original example in excellent condition, running well, serviced recently.
2. Looking for lower end beater....good source?
Mart's at $850 seems like a good one to me. You could re-lume it if you wanted and still be under a grand for an original.
3. Are the "built-mod" ones ok? (Not my first choice...but $125 is enticing).
I'm not sure what this means.

If you hate Seiko, why are you buying one. The pitfalls are aftermarket parts being sold as original, although it's usually fairly obvious. If you're not sure, post them up here and someone can tell you.

Re: Seiko 6105
Mart's is one of the better buys out there right now.
I have one in the shop getting freshened up. Personally the 6309 is more win for me. 6105's chrome on the dials almost always have crud on them.

Well, I find them bland and uninspiring in design and generally reflect an Asian feel.jswing wrote:

The 6105 attracts me with the case shape, crown placement, and the indecies.

Re: Seiko 6105
I was just yanking your chain. I like lots of the Seiko divers, but the 6105 has one of the coolest cases of any Seiko IMO. There's a rumor there will be a re-introduction, so since I'm not really a vintage guy, that's what I'm waiting for. I'll be on that like a cheap suit.demer03 wrote:Well, I find them bland and uninspiring in design and generally reflect an Asian feel.jswing wrote:

Re: Seiko 6105
Mike Mounce seems to be the king of museum-quality vintage Seiko pieces. He might have a less-than-perfect example for sale that's in your price range. He posts as mmounce on SCWF.

Re: Seiko 6105
They stayed pretty true to size with the 6309 re-introduction, and the 6105 (the asymmetric one) is pretty big to begin with, so fingers crossed.JP Chestnut wrote:Hopefully they don't make it too big or thick.jswing wrote:I was just yanking your chain. Re: Seiko 6105
Kris has the smaller symmetrical model. I tried it on once. I was sold on getting a 6105. However, I chose asymmetrical. Such a cool watch. Don't be a hater.
One suggestion. Make sure you get the proper waffle style strap for it.

Re: Seiko 6105
I've got a 6106-8100 which I understand uses a similar case to the symmetrical 6105. It's a pretty comfortable watch, no doubt, but I still don't feel like it has the presence of the asymmetrical one.

Re: Seiko 6105
After having one in top condition I don't think I'll ever mess around with one that is in less condition. I've had to service a few too which is common if the seller says "no service history". Chances are it'll need one.
NATO and vintage ISO are my favorite ways to wear it-
