Can you wear an 18mm watch strap?

Post by snootydog » Tue Dec 01, 2015 2:21 am

Here is my dilemma, I've wanted a white dial Bauhaus style watch for ages but the likes of Junghans Max Bill are still out of my price range at the moment and the Junkers doesn't do it for me. I recently saw one I really like a lot. It's quartz but with no second hand I won't have to watch that clicking round. At 38mm case size I was surprised to see how big it wears on the wrist, but as usual there is a downside in that it has an 18mm lug width and I'm not sure it looks right. It may be that I'm just so used to seeing 20 & 22mm straps on my wrist. Do any of you guys wear watches on 18mm straps? They do have an option, a 40mm case with 20mm lugs but I don't really like the numeral font on that one.
Here are the pics I've borrowed from the web site.
First one is the one I like best but with 18mm lugs.

Here is the slightly larger one with 20mm lugs.

A notched watch strap may be the answer but who sells those?

Yep, I wear my son's Seiko 5 sometimes and it's 18mm strap.

Speaking of 18mm straps, I have one of my Croc Elites in Blue 18mm that I will ship to the first person asking for it.
Just post here and then send me a PM with your address.

At 38mm, the 18mm strap will look great. Good proportion from case to strap.

After owning the Speedy and the PO (two 42mm watches with 20mm lugs), I find that the Seiko SKX007 looks weird with 22mm lugs.

as long as it looks right on the watch.

my zodiac seawolf takes a 17.5mm, but it works.

Here are my girly wrist (6 3/4) with an 18mm strap and a 38 case to give you some perspective.

18mm strap on my IWC MarkXII. the strap fits the size of the watch. I don't
understand your concerns.

Thanks for your opinions guys, much appreciated. There are far more of you wearing watches with 18mm straps than I thought.

Absolutely. I have a couple of 39mm Momentum divers with 18mm lugs and I think they look great in that size.

To the point where - as Jopeprez indicated above - the Seiko SKX's look clunky at 22mm.

Only ones I've had are on (appropriately) smaller watches - I think all of these are 36mm - and I have no problem with them.

I'm a Bauhaus fan too. Here's another option if the lug width really bugs you. But it has a date window.

I never heard of Bering. That's the cleanest one next to a Max Bill I've seen. The price is right.

I agree 100% that the seiko kinda would be better Rollin on 20's, as the kids say.

I will be the odd one out then, and say it is a girly man strap size.

All depends on the watch and the strap. I missed my CD-2 for a month and got used to wearing my 6105 on a repro waffle strap. Got the CD-2 back over a week ago and it's been nothing but 24mm Drew strap goodness ever since. Got the canvas on right now. Love it. All in for 24.

I have 2 similar vintage diver models with 18mm non-tapered straps that present very different looks, but I think they work. I would recommend non-tapered. Even more difficult to pull it off a diver. ImageImage

This is a 18mm strap like some one said better than 24mm with a clock on your wrist  With the case being big you don't notice the strap being 18mm.
