Two great watches Matt. Very hard to go wrong with Seiko. Especially now, as you said, with what the Yen is doing.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but at one point I was all in on vintage Seiko. Used to be you could pick up nice examples of 6217-800X and 6105-80XX models at reasonable prices. Not so much anymore. Ten years ago I even bought a 6159-7000 and a 6159-7010 (The granddadies of the Marine Master and Tuna) for $300 each. Wish to hell I had held on to those! Here's just a few that I had that are worth much more today than when I got bought them.

6217-8000 (April 1965 production. One of the very first)

6105-8000 (March 1969 production. One of the earliest Resist/Resist, not Proof marked examples)

6105-8110 (August 1974 production)

^^^great stuff, Steve. I suspect the prices on popular vintage Seikos will continue to rise.

So what's the best place to buy a Marine Master now? And how much? I've always wanted to try one.

Definetely the time to buy. I've looked and looked again at the tuna, but keep finding something else to buy.

Nice additions.

Chino is cheapest of the three big-time exporters in my experience.

I've bought from these guys with no issues. This link is mislabeled as quartz, but I am sure you'd receive the real deal as pictured.

I also think Mr Kobayashi could also meet or beat that price..and he has great English and is a Seiko dealer with a B+M store in Japan.

You've got the memory of an elephant. :)

Truthfully, I've always liked the watch overall. There were just two things influencing my opinion:

1) The unrealistic expectations set by the fanboy reviews I had read on WUS early in my forum days. I expected it to far exceed the Rolex Sub in every way. I was a little too naive (thx WUS) and those inflated expectations hurt my first impressions of the watch. I've had a chance to outgrow that initial reaction now.

2) It did get up to being a $2k mint used watch. Prior to Omega increasing prices drastically, this was more than or equal to a PO, Speedy, etc... Every watch has its set of "flaws" as perceived by the owner, all the way to Patek/Lange/etc..., and you have to be able to reconcile those flaws vs. the other benefits and cost. At $2500 new, wasn't for me. At nearly $1k less new, it's a steal of a deal.

So yeah, there are still things I don't love about it, but there were things I didn't love about watches that cost much more, so I'm cool with it. :)

Those MM are pretty cool, nice grab.

Why don't you like the Spring Drive(s)? Some of those are really sweet.

Having owned a GS 028 diver I loved the look but had "emotional issues" with a Seiko that cost more than a Rolex Sub.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I've considered selling my Sub and grabbing the special edition MM300 and the white dial GS Quartz diver. I know it sounds silly, but I just love Seiko and those are really cool.

Congrats on yours Matt

I wouldn't do that. You'd be better off keeping the sub and saving to buy one of the others. Seiko's are great, but I wouldn't want a collection made solely of them.... And neither watch is a substitute for a sub IMO.
