Gunny Strap (Peter) Purchase feedback

Post by raulbr18 » Wed Nov 12, 2014 4:04 am

Hi Guys

I need a feedback from you.

I'm about to pull the trigger on 2 straps from Peter of Gunny Strap.

Have anyone here ever purchased from him?

Thank you for your help,
raul

I am not a fan of his straps, but that is just personal preference. I know several people here on DWC have ordered from him and been very happy.

I've had maybe 5, all perfect and Peter was good to deal with.
"30ish years of martial arts and I've actually had the honor of training lots of LEO, spec ops and even SEAL team 6 on base, fitness training, not martial arts, but still the coolest thing I've done.

Full on egg head corporate job and I fly quite a bit so I'm really looking forward to adding to my collection of TSA friendly self defense tools. I have amcouple tactical pens, but I want to up the game and get into some custom stuff. Been watch obsessed for a while but this seems more fun.

Thanks for letting me play! "

I ordered 2 leather NATOs and they were ok. Gave one to my brother and sold the other.

My brother has a "Caitlin II" on his Dievas watch (kind of a Radiomir copy). Nice strap. He said Peter was decent to work with.

Gunny is my fav. I have a bunch of his stuff and he is an absolute pleasure to deal with. He goes above and beyond. He has handled special requests from me and I have never been disappointed with the results of his work. He has always exceeded expectation.

He is the only guy that can make a 6-7 mm thick strap butter soft.

I've never owned one but I've seen a lot of great ones in pics. Lots of interesting stuff.

Making a 7mm thick leather strap is nothing to be proud of.

It's not particularly difficult especially if you're sandwiching the strap but 6-7mm would take a heck of a tall watch to carry :) I guess something like 20mm tall Aquadive 300 maybe?

Of course it would be for tall watches. It works quite well on my Kalmar which isn't a small watch by any means. It's all about proportions which you say. Obviously you wouldn't put it on a seamaster per say.

The sandwich material gunny uses is awesome which I am aware is the main reason he gets em soft like he does. Other strap makers i had experience with always seem to use stiffer fillers.

Because it doesn't take much skill to fold a full thickness piece of leather in half. The. Skill is working the leather to an appropriate thickness for the item you are making. For a work belt, 7mm is fine. For a relatively small watch strap 7mm is just lazy.

That's not how Peter made it, not even close. Other makers maybe but not how mine was made. His leather work and conditioning is stellar. Not to mention the lug holes tight to even fit on the lug bars on the orca which are pretty dam tight.

Different strokes for different folks. I prefer a refined strap that is not too thick. 5mm at most.

For sure 99% of the time I prefer the same and for tool divers 5mm is the sweet spot. I decided to push the limit and get a 'baconator'
