Help wanted

Post by Jsa9791 » Sun Jul 27, 2014 3:45 pm

I am close to making a deal for a birth year 1680 submariner on TRF. I have provided the link, and I'll post the pictures below shortly.

I've looked it over, and it looks legit to me, but there are members here on DWC that are more knowledgable than myself.
So if anyone has the time to look this over, let me know if something doesn't seem right.

The only thing I noticed, and it may be the lighting, was the red gears on the movement looking the wrong shade of red.

Looks v good to me. I think the odd gear colour is to do with the photo setup rather than reality. Bracelet seems to be in incredible good nick. Very little stretch. Price reflects the highly polished case I'd say. Eg left top lug. So case not v crisp as they say. That's the big differential with prices in my experience.

I don't see anything that would give me pause as to legitimacy. That said, it looks like the case has been heavily polished. If that doesn't bother you, and if this is a known and trusted seller, you're probably okay.

I think you can probably get a lot better than this piece, which as JBZ mentioned is overpolished and a hodge-podge of original and replacement parts.

He said the pearl is replacement, he references that the hands are original and match the dial, which kind of implies the dial isn't original. The second hand is a luminova replacement as well.

So.... everything except the case and the hour/minute hands is replacement, maybe? :)

In looking at the bezel insert, I'm wondering if the whole insert is aftermarket (not just a replacement pearl). The pearl sits oddly in the insert.

thanks JBZ. the more i look at it, the more I'm thinking that there may be too many issues with this one.

While I don't know anything about the details that are being mentioned, I see that the watch has been up for sale since March, which is now 4 1/2 months. If it was a real good deal it would have been gone by now... Maybe the parts or maybe the price... something seems a little off here.

Overpolished. I'd walk. 1680's enough around.
