I respect that he has trained a group of people in a valuable trade so they can to go back home to an economy where you have limited choices and better their lives. You would slag him for marketing it, but what the hell good is it if its is not a viable business? He didn't go off and get a low bid from a cheap labor business.....
But, you won't see that. Slag on. Opinions are like assholes...we all have them. I'm comfortable with mine, so piss off with yours.
Elvis has left the building
Actually I did say just that in a previous thread that if he was doing this for those reasons it was good with me and that Sherpas are exploited in a large way by the companies that employ them.
But it does not feel like that in all the marketing I've read. To me he would do way more good by having made this a completely separate endeavor. Make it a wholly owned subsidiary with lower price points, make more watches, help more Sherpas. Keep the Kobold name associated with it but be subtle.
Is that what's happening? Nope. He's got two trained Sherpas as watchmakers and I bet 2-3 supporting Himalayan individuals as support.
It sounds magnanimous until you realize it's 2 Sherpas. That's the best that can be done? Two?
Now it sounds like a gimmick. I've got me two Sherpas making this Kobold watch I'm charging big bucks for. Wonder how much trickles down to the 2 trained Sherpas in the form of wages.
Besides I've also Said there are some Kobold watches I like. I like some of the product. I don't really connect with the mysticism surrounding the founder and all his "entrepreneurship". You never hear where the money came from for all this fledgling watch company. I'm betting he did not max out his credit cards, borrow money from his friends, or have the early equivalent of a kick starter project.
He went to the home safe and dragged out some fat stacks or the big checkbook and wrote one.
The Nepalese watches do have lower price points.

I'm not crazy about all of this Sherpa stuff or the QC issues I keep hearing about, but Kobold does make a damn good looking watch. There isn't one in these photos that I wouldn't be happy to see on my wrist.demer03 wrote:Unwashed heathens....

Somehow the Sherpa thing doesn't bother me.
Can't wait to see some if their watches hit the forum for a whole and head people's thoughts.

I'm not sure, could be Jacob. Basically what I was saying was that since KoboldJP Chestnut wrote:Are you the most positive person in the world? The bold sentence made me actually chuckle.AtomicTom wrote:Always thought Kobold was such a cool company. I like how they only actually

is evidently making only around 1000 watches a year, they can then take their time,
and focus on just making a great watch.

You would think that would be the case, but the evidence suggests otherwise.AtomicTom wrote:Basically what I was saying was that since KoboldJP Chestnut wrote:Are you the most positive person in the world? Have to admit, I really don't know a ton about the company. Just honestly have seen their
watches over the years, and thought they were nice. Don't care for the prices really, but
beyond that, they seemed cool.
Thanks again ! Always learning something new.

I don't get Sherpas. Why not go with Oompa-Loompas instead? They worked fine for Wonka. Just saying ....
Re: Kobold Article
That's an awesome article. What I get from it is that all I need to start a company is financial backing and a father with an instrument factory.
I kid about not getting Kobold and respect MK for the companies success, but IMO he treats the company like a hobby and doesn't give a hoot if it makes money.
Worse case scenario, he takes over a very successful instrument company.

This is one of the things I respect most. From other articles I have read, MK grew up in what was described as a "castle" with servants. He went to college and created a successful brand. A brand that has made some bitch'n watches over the years.fastward wrote:JP Chestnut wrote:Don't be stupid - you also need a Nobel Prize winner to take a personal interest in where you go to undergraduate collegefastward wrote:That's an awesome article.
