Acquisitions 101 - or how NOT to get a watch

Post by mattcantwin » Mon Mar 25, 2013 11:50 am

Wearing the IWC 3227 today that I got from Matt.

(picture of the watch from his sales post below)

I am very pleased with the watch, bought an IWC kevlar strap for it and have a brown croc on order from JacobStraps.
With the two straps I got from Matt, I will have 4 straps in addition to the bracelet. This has been a great addition.

I am glad I was able to work something out with Matt (my hero  ) in order to obtain the watch.

I started thinking of the history that went into getting the watch:

IWC 3227 - received in trade from Matt for a Tudor Pelagos plus $ from me

Tudor Pelagos - received in trade from Rob for a Bremont SuperMarine plus $ from me

Bremont SuperMarine - received BNIB in trade from Timeless Watch for a DA-36, DA-37, U1 and Breitling Ti Seawolf plus $ from me

DA-36, DA-37, U1 and Breitling - as I recall all were purchased with $$$$ from me.

So, to get the Ingy took 6 watches and $$$$$$$ from me.

In order to break even, if I ever sell it, I would need about $22,000.

This one strikes me as the most painful. Ouchy.

I was smitten with the SuperMarine after trying one on during a NYC watch crawl with the boys.

At the time, I was considering my first Rolex, but thought this was the better choice for me.

On the Bremont rubber strap, it was one of the most comfortable feeling watches ever.

I foolishly believed I would never flip it and getting a new one was a good decision.

Apparently not. :raised:

You also overpaid for the Seawolf if I remember right.

Jeeze Matt. Timeless must've made 4-5k on that deal. I hope I find a state of satisfaction soon. I'm tired of flipping watches.

Ouch. Good lesson there... Though I'm not sure what it is :-)

This needs to be on the DWC banner for a month.

Matt, good thing is alot of other hobbies arnt as liquid, I know you'll spend money along the way, but you can always sell a current watch in a pinch.

Holy Cow !!! ...
I can't believe you traded in all those watches to get a new SM500 !!!

PS : I just traded my Sinn to Dan @ Timeless as well ! The easiest AD around to trade with ..

Sometimes the trades to an AD are worth the value-shafting, just so you don't have to sell all the watches individually. All those watches, sans the U1, are slow sellers.

I agree (or agreed) with Matt on this one.

I could have done better by about $500 to $600 with selling on my own on the forums, but at the time was not in the mood to sell 4 watches.

Although it wasn't great, I thought Dan gave me a reasonable value on the trade-ins.

Guess it was a way to reduce the Bremont price without reducing the Bremont price.

:) Well ! Well I Well .. In my last 6 months at DWC, I have never seen you a beating in a watch trade. You could get to trade a never seen before Zenith and make more than 1.5K off it ... Master Wu, What are you talking about ? ;) ;) ;)

I happen to be one of the guys not averse to selling any ole watch. :)

*edit* But it doesn't always work out, as Zack points out below.

Don't forget - just because asking price is on something, doesn't mean that's what it sells for. Also, fees and shipping certainly add up. I know Matt took a beating just last week on a watch ;).

I prefer not looking back.
What's done is done.

Plus it's part of the hobby to me. But I enjoy what I have today and the chase for the next one :)
