Just wondering..

Post by el presidente » Sat Dec 31, 2011 2:00 am

What other brand does restore watches to its former glory like Omega?

I know Omega has parts for some watches that are 40+ years, and if they dont have it ( ex.dials) they have a guy that makes them for Omega.

This is not an Omega fanboi thread, just wondering

If Omega does it then Rolex must do it just a little bit better.

Rolex has done some amazing things with vintage restorations, although you pay through the nose for it.

But Omega is the best for this type of thing, in my opinion.

Fortanes estate jewelry and watches of Carmel Ca. Was doing such amazing restoration work on Rolex watches that the big boys from Switzerland came out looked at their work and offered them an AD on the spot... Some say they have the best selection of vintage Rolex pieces in the states  They also have a full, full line of new Rolex and a lot used brands including panerai

From everything I have seen over the years, Omega definitely leads the way when it comes to retoration and availability of OEM parts for vintage pieces. Rolex is the exact same, but does not stock parts for models that date as far back as Omega does. (I think that is about the way it goes). I sent my 1972 Heuer to the TAG Heuer service center in NJ and their vintage Heuer guru worked on it. Granted, all they replaced were the pushers and crystals as the thing was practically unused. Still though, they had the parts on hand. It's amazing though what Omega does with an old watch. ROar's vintage Speedy MK whatever is about the finest restoration job I have seen. I handled this watch and believe me it is something to behold, especially if you ever say the "before" pics.

Zenith does good work, Tag does good work on vintage Heuer, Omega as we all know if awesome.

I'm not so sure about Rolex. I think some service centers are good, but I think some swap original parts out with service parts, possibly decimating the value.

If there is/was any question about their availability of spare parts...
This is the bag of old parts that came back with the Speedy. The other watches came back with the similar bags...

Omega Bienne? Definitely tops here. The other Omega service centers, not even close (especially when it comes to case refinishing).

I know Lange does a lot of stuff with laser welding so that you don't lose any precious metal when it comes time to repairing deeper gouges.

Audemars Piguet and Patek Phillipe do fantastic work on very old restorations. They have special watchmakers who do only restorations. They will manufacture parts if necessary.
