Looks or movement?

Post by TikkTakk » Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:41 am

I could easily buy lots of watches just for the looks and apps...and pay for battery switch when needed - and get heaps of them (watches that is)....

My love for watches backfired when I bought Roar his "first real" watch... You all (Y'all) did me wrong :(

The first thing he did was to google the friggin' watch.....KA BOOOM --> WUS!!!!

This is just an easy poll, not asking for clarification..
Best,
Silje

What's the difference? If something is wrong with the movement; could you fix it?

Auto snob these days unfortunately, not that I so much look down on quartz, I just love the whole auto thing. Sweep seconds, display casebacks, blued screws, handwinding....and a big one is not having to take the caseback off some of these divers every 3 years or so, just to change a battery.

I can go to the WalMart RIGHT NOW and buy a $28 Casio with a built in atomic clock receiver that will be dead nuts accurate til the day the battery dies. Instead I have a Kobold Seal on my wrist that cost somebody over 100x more new.

100x. Think about that for a second. A mechanical watch that keeps within 15 sec a day is acceptable and that Casio is DEAD NUTS.

So its not function.

Gotta be something more....

For me its a few things. First, its the understanding of the movement, the engineering, the machining, the labor of love to create it.... let me assure you, nobody at Casio cares about any of those things. They just build a little machine that does what it does. No soul. Wanna own the definition of soul? Buy a UTS. I swear there's german sweat built right in!

So I buy a mechanical soul and slap it on a chunk o leather that someone hand tooled and wear it. Its like jewelery, except its not 'pretty'. Its not a Rolex... nobody knows what it is and even fewer care. Its man-lingerie.

BTW, I voted for the last option because I just don't understand how Silje went about picking the poll options.

I voted, "Just along for the ride." This "hobby" has been so much fun, I can't wait where it takes me next.

I think Seth has it right. Mechanical watches have soul. I love that it needs ME to run.

Man lingerie? Of course!!! I love to show mine off. Sort like I'm on WIS Gone Wild.

My entry into watches was similar to how TikkTakk described Roar's. The wife suggested I get a watch. I bought an inexpensive quartz, googled it and BLAMO --> watch forums.

Still hooked.

I like autos for most of the same reasons Seth detailed above. I also respect much of the case work being done by UTS, Anonimo, Ennebi,etc...I know some folks get caught up in movement being used by expensive watch companies...In the end, In-house, highly modified, sort of modfied, adjusted 3 ways, 4 ways, COSC...all work for me...I look at the whole package being presented by the Watch Co and make a decision based on that.

I didn't lie at all! Looks are tantamount. I don't care how much somebody bled in it! If its ugly, I ain't buying it.

Its gotta LOOK killer.

If its not a mechanical, i wont buy it. So movement first.
And yeah, it has the look good, or i wont buy it. The poll does not have a choice for that though.
