Another Byrd model
Another Byrd model
Am I the only one who go this e-mail today? Surely not. The specs on the website aren't the specs for this watch, Hopefully Brian will get back to me about what is inside. I'd like to see the three dial colors.
I like coin edge bezel's, but this sterile bezel looks nice also. The price is a temptress and I'm sitting on a credit. Damn Kobold!
Dear Friends,
We are happy to announce the release of our latest American timepiece, the R.E. Byrd Automatic.
On November 28th 1929, Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd (USN) became the first man to reach the South Pole by air. This feat secured him his place in the record books and the hearts of countless people around the world who were inspired by his expeditions and the stories of romantic adventure that would follow. By that time, Admiral Byrd, a naval aviator, had already completed an expedition to the North Pole, and made an attempt to be the first man to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.
The new Kobold R.E. Byrd Automatic pays tribute to this American hero of yesteryear by combining retro styling with U.S. craftsmanship. Housed in a 41mm U.S.-made stainless steel case, the R.E. Byrd Automatic is powered by an automatic movement and features a highly legible minimalist dial (available in Deep Black, Snow White and Fuselage Gray. Coated with anti-U.V. lacquer, the dial is designed to withstand the test of time. The R.E. Byrd Automatic features a scratch-resistant, domed sapphire crystal treated with purple-hued antireflective coating to enhance legibility.
The R.E. Byrd Automatic is available at an introductory offer of only $1,450.00 -the lowest price of a serially produced American wristwatch in over forty years! At this price, the watch arrives on a simple, military-style canvas band; is shipped in a basic presentation box (wooden collector's box available at a surcharge); and is covered by a 1-year warranty. Existing Kobold customers receive their Byrd Automatic with a wooden collector's box and a 3-year warranty ($600 value). The R.E. Byrd Automatic is available immediately and begins shipping on July 18th 2011. The introductory offer expires September 15th, 2011.
If you have any questions about this watch, please feel free to contact us, we are happy to assist you.
Sincerely,
Brian Satchell

Re: Another Byrd model
That is pretty classy although I do like crown protectors on a sports watch.
Price is pretty unbeatable. I would bet $5 its a 2892 or 2824 in there.

Re: Another Byrd model
Oh also on the product page: Movement: ETA 2824-A2
Swiss-made
winding automatic mechanism
jewels 21
balance Glucydur
mainspring Nivarox 1
It would have been nice if they put a small engraving on the case back or outline on on the dial of the original plane used for that trip. (edit: Looks like the chrono version does exactly that)
I think I prefer this variant:

Re: Another Byrd model
Yeah but the product page also says it's 39mm not 41mm and they claim it's serially produced in US. I guess I was expecting a different movement and assumed this was a IT glitch, with details from a previous Byrd. Not the case, since those other two were chronos and used different movements.
39mm and change is a deal breaker. 41mm is doable.
Oh well.

Re: Another Byrd model
If that's a 20mm lug size, it looks more like 39 or 40mm to me...
Either way, cool looking watch and yeah, for me 42mm is the ideal size for a watch.

Re: Another Byrd model
what is a serially produced American wristwatch but that is "swiss made"?
is this watch from Nepal maybe? I hate to say it but when I here "swiss made" it comes of as being a generic title.

This guy was too small. It was gorgeous though. It went straight to flip-ville.

is this one being made by the Tibetan Sherpas? Not saying anything one way or the other, I just remember they were starting to give back to Tibet by training local watchmakers.

This watch looks different than the Himalayan model.

Re: Another Byrd model
Not a bad looking watch or deal. Which hands does it come with? The gallery shows all black hands.
I just picked up a white dialed watch today and need to reload otherwise this would be a topic of conversation when they call me to tell me my Comanche is ready.

Its in BDs first post. Admiral Byrd was a polar explorer.
Re: Another Byrd model
Brian said the case back is engraved. He confirms it is the ETA 2824 and the watch is 39mm and change. He also says the case (caseback, midcase and bezel) are US made.
Too bad about the size. I like the price and they look really nice. I don't know if I would get grey or white.
He sent pictures, but in apx format and I'm having a time modifying them.

Re: Another Byrd model
so they did start making cases in the US now? I thought it was reported last time that idea was aborted?

Smitten are you? I can't believe that was the first time you saw it. So all that hostility toward me this weekend was actually jealousy? Jade isn't your color my friend, it's ugly on you. Here is a little buttery soft, bead blasted goodness for you.chris7013 wrote:fastward wrote:Darin let me know when you're gonna flip that bead blasted piece of shit so I can sell everything in time to get rid of it for you.patstarrx wrote:Duno what that is ^ but watch sucks

It's not bad I guess. Like how the pretense has been washed away but it's still classy.
