Re: Alden sleuths info check.

I find it odd that one of Alden's iconic styles comes on a last that seems to give so many people trouble. Just one of those things, I guess. Alden drives me crazy with that - their LHS, longwing, and PTB all come on weird lasts! I feel like a battered wife: shitty service, bad QC, and weird sizing...

Re: Lew and Huey Watches

The design is nice, but the dog, the brand name, and the Riccardo name all turn me off. I can't stand the second hand. In fact, I'm not a fan of any watch with a "funky" second hand. It's a shame that GO uses that silly "GO" second hand on so many of their nice models. Don't even get me started on ...

Re: Alden sleuths info check.

Barrie is a tough last to fit, but the shoes are usually worth it. I have wasted thousands trying to get the Barrie last to fit. This was even with the "help" of Alden in San Francisco. If a person has a narrow heel and wide forefoot the Barrie will probably never fit adequately. I wish someone wou...

Re: Alden sleuths info check.

No real experience with the Barrie last, but I had the hardest time with the Van last. I love the looks of the leisure handsewn, so I ended up wearing 1/2 size up. They're a little loose, but the smaller size didn't work for me - pain across the top of my foot and instep. The Aberdeen last fits me ...

Re: Alden sleuths info check.

For me, with moderately narrow feet, the key was getting a C-width, and then using a thin insert. Some people size down a half size, but I agree that the main issue with the Barrie is the wide heel. Yeah, I'm a 7.5B on the Brannock device, and in most normal fitting lasts (Snap, Hampton, Aberdeen)....

Re: Alden sleuths info check.

Almost 100% chance of the Barrie last (which I hate the fit of). I'm not sure why Alden sells most of their best designs on a last with a heel cup the size of a softball. Also, make sure those shoes aren't stamped with an "R" somewhere or you will be over paying for a pair of seconds. Thanks-more p...

Re: Finally tried on an AT 2000

Like the AT 2000 iterations, but I still lust for a 3536. After trying Darin's for a few days, I was smitten. Just never been in the stars though and I blew my load on the Sub-C back last July and have been on watch-buying hiatus since then. I have a SS black dial 3536 and it's a seriously high qua...

Re: Finally tried on an AT 2000

I'v never tried one, but it's always been on my list of pieces I admire. I am afraid that it will never join my collection unless I can hunt one down with a nato adapter. What is "aggressive" pricing for a new one? They can be had for $2500-3000 quite easily preowned. Just over $4K out the door for...

Re: Crazy Canuck Watch Crawl...

So, I met up with James, Keith and Gordo (and Matt, and Wayne) for a watch crawl this morning, and, well, we ogled watches. The first stop was IWC, where my personal highlight was the new Portuguese Chronograph Classic: http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n257/craniotes/Watches/272AA2A1-7738-4D61-85...

Re: Explorer - yay or nay

I've done a lot of "I want this..but I can grab that" lately. I've bleed a lot of money doing it. It's true. I've never compromised for a good deal, or expediency, and not wished I hadn't. It's not as if a "cheap" Rolex isn't expensive. If you're going to spend $4,000 for a watch you somewhat like,...

Re: To all the new people

Can someone fill me on what's happening??? Epic WUS thread perhaps that's causing this mass migration?? For me, maybe. It was a combination of having enough free time (my wife's out of town) to really get into the forums and the culmination of my growing disillusionment with the more usual spots. T...

Re: Explorer - yay or nay

So the AD i go to a lot says they have a new Explorer that i can work a trade on if i want. I was hoping it was an Explorer 2, but no luck. I'm concerned that at 39mm i might find it to be rather small. Anyone input is welcome? I don't care for the new upsized Explorer 1. When Rolex increased the d...

Re: Thoughts on Everest replacement Rolex rubber strap?

There was/is a guy on the bay that sells an aftermarket "glide lock" clasp - and apparently the quality is decent for the price (under $50). Not a bad idea if you want to leave the original on the bracelet and throw the knock off on the Everest. ;) There was a really good thread on TRF started by a...

Re: Rolex price question

If it has a rehaut chapter ring, then I have seen them for around $4500-5000 for full kit. Personally, I'd go for one without the rehaut chapter since they are significantly cheaper (and practically the same watch) , or a newer 114060, which can be had for $6000-6500 lnib. Cheaper and better lookin...

Re: GMT bezel insert source

Try bringing the watch to the local dealer. Although they won't sell loose inserts, it's a different story with watch in hand. They're usually cheaper than the pros on the forums, too. I believe the US dealers are more uptight about selling them than they are in Europe, so you might have to take it...
