Re: A phone for your phone, Palm Companion

So, now that smart phones have gotten to nearly tablet sized devices, I guess the idea is you can leave the big phone in your bag and just have this thing readily accessible in your pocket. I guess I won't say "never", but personally I struggle with ever seeing the need for one of these things in my...

Apparently someone emailed Unimatic and sent them the link and their response was “haters gonna hate”
That doesn't sound very Italian
"Odiatori che vanno a odiare" - sounds much better!

From Miami to Mahwah. Kind of the opposite of Shorty’s journey.

Actually Mahwah isn’t that bad as far as NJ goes.

Re: Opinions-first car for new teen driver

The upside to a manual transmission in my opinion is: 1) they are essentially a millennial theft deterrent system and 2) it forces the kid to be a bit more engaged in the act of driving so it is more challenging to put on makeup, text, or mess with the radio when driving around town. The idea behind...

Re: Opinions-first car for new teen driver

Ha! You are thinking along entirely different lines than I would for my son's first vehicle. I was thinking along the lines of a basic "work truck" edition full size pick up with a bench seat. Make it big enough that he has good visibility and heavy enough that he is likely to survive his first acci...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

I suspect you can find a replacement plastic movement ring. In the photos the movement ring Unimatic used doesn't look like a custom part. A quick google image search finds bags of similar looking rings available from a variety of vendors in assortment of sizes for less than $10 for the entire bag. ...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

I am using Dan / OWC as an example of a micro brand who is trying to do the right thing, the correct thing. What Dan does isn't necessarily unique, but he is an example of someone doing his level best to deliver a quality product. I'm sure Graeme and Graham (see what I did there  ) are no dif...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

Is it possible the owner bought it second hand and that the previous owner did the movement swap after f-ing up the original movement? This seems too fubar to come from someone who’s been in the business that long. This is JV league shit. Did Jake look at the dial feet? We're they there or was the ...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

The problem is they are actually using 2 movement spacers. The first is the stock Seiko grey Derlin / nylon spacer you can see in the above photograph showing the dial feet. The second spacer is the white nylon / plastic spacer you see Jake pulling out with his tweezers. I guess I don't see the spa...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

First, yes, from everything I've read and talked about with Dan from OWC, watch cases are machined to accept specific movements. It is challenging to swap movements for exactly the reasons Jake demonstrates in that video. The other issue is the stem height. I haven't checked of the difference betwe...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

I think buying a micro is no different than buying anything else. You should research your potential purchase and decide how well you trust the manufacturer based upon them having done the right thing in the past. If you don't want to bother researching, then yes, absolutely go with the major player...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

You can clearly see the alignment groove machined into the case to accept the 9015 stock movement ring alignment tab. Just now thinking - I wonder how that dial is mounted to the movement? It stands to reason that if Unimatic lost their intended Miyota movement supply very late in the production cyc...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

Well, if you are able to mount hands, a proper fix is only $100 away (maybe a bit more if you have to relume the new hands to match the existing dial. Just buy the 9015 movement and some new hands and mount the existing dial with dial dots. Option "B" would be to custom machine a nicer spacer. If yo...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

I borrowed a first edition U1 and it didn't have this issue with movement play. I bet the company that assembled these watches had a mix up. I don't think this is uncommon at all though. I have a 1200T Doxa here that was suppose to come with a 2824-2, but it actually has a SW200 in it. This situati...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

Absolutely for sure. If this were my watch new from Unimatic, it would never have gotten to Jake. It would've been on its way back to Italy for a refund as soon as I saw the dial swim around in the case. Given the watch is with Jake, I'm guessing the watch is no longer returnable. This is why I tho...

Re: Wrong Movements Installed in Unimatic U1?

I wonder if the dial feet for a Seiko movement are the same as for the Miyota? I suspect not. I also suspect the hands are different due to differing pinion sizes. If my suspicions are correct, this would mean Unimatic had the cases machined first, then their Miyota supplier flaked so they had to r...
